Real-world Experience & Skills to Succeed in a Fast-Moving Industry

If you dream of creating media content and PR campaigns for a sports franchise, you will love studying sports communication at º£½ÇÉçÇø. In our program, you will develop the writing and video production skills you need in the fast-paced, dynamic, and exciting world of sports. Our program also emphasizes hands-on, real-world experience, so you can count on getting plenty of that, too.

Charlotte is home to four professional sports leagues – NASCAR, the Panthers, the Hornets, and Charlotte FC – as well as several minor league organizations and the Charlotte office of ESPN. There is no shortage of action, whether you’re watching a game or getting real-world experience behind the scenes.

Meet Kayah Shamapande-Scarboro ’23 & Grace Wesoly ’21 & ’23

Kayah Shamapande-Scarboro ’23 is a communications coordinator for NASCAR. Prior to graduating from º£½ÇÉçÇø, Kayah earned a Difference Makers Sports Fellowship from the Carolina Panthers and worked as an intern for the Charlotte Hornets.

Grace Wesoly ’21 & ’23 is a digital production assistant at ESPN. Prior to graduating, Grace traveled on an award-winning international program to Rio De Janeiro, Brazil, with 18 of her classmates during the Summer Olympic Games of 2016, where her team produced multimedia stories published by WCNC-TV and USA Today.  Wesoly’s work as a student journalist at º£½ÇÉçÇø was published by the Charlotte Observer and WFAE 90.7.

Program Highlights

  • In the Sports Communication program at º£½ÇÉçÇø, you can choose from unique elective courses focused on multimedia storytelling, public relations, or journalism.
  • You will leave our program with the skills necessary to communicate across multiple media and for a wide range of audiences.
  • We also offer students hands-on, real-world experiences and coveted internship opportunities. Our students work on ESPN broadcasts of the º£½ÇÉçÇø University Division I athletic events and help with public relations efforts and marketing collateral for º£½ÇÉçÇø Athletics.
  • Our renowned faculty members are well-connected, with relationships at every professional sports organization in the Charlotte metropolitan area. And there are several: Charlotte is home to NASCAR, the Carolina Panthers organization, the Charlotte Hornets, and the Charlotte FC, our first Major League Soccer team.

Accelerated MA in Communication (MACom)

º£½ÇÉçÇø offers an accelerated pathway for qualified Sport Communication students who want a faster route to a graduate degree. Eligible students may receive an invitation after admission, complete an intent-to-enroll form, and receive personalized advising to stay on track. Students apply formally by the end of their sophomore year and complete the pathway in the 3.5 + 1 format.
